Harvey Milk Plaza

Working closely with the surrounding community, interested stakeholders, and impassioned project allies, our team developed a complete reimagining of Harvey Milk Plaza

Our team—with PTA as Architect of Record in partnership with Mar Jang Architects, SWA, The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza, SFMTA, and San Francisco Public Works—developed a vision for the new plaza that builds on the neighborhood’s identity and on the legacy of Harvey Milk: a vibrant public square anchored by a pedestal for gatherings, speeches, and calls for action. A digital monument contextualizes these formal gestures, telling the story of Harvey Milk and the history of the Castro; its panels of various sizes reference historic and contemporary protest signs. An outdoor grove provides a place for quiet contemplation, while an indoor gallery, daylit by an oculus, hosts both permanent and rotating art exhibits. Curated in partnership with local organizations, these exhibits will carry forward the plaza’s mission to amplify community voices.
