Frederick Douglas Haynes
Gardens Apartments
Partnering with Beacon Development Group, the Third Baptist Church—the first African American congregation west of the Rockies—embarked on a sustainable redevelopment of the Frederick Douglass Haynes Gardens Apartments.
A 104-unit complex developed in 1969 and designed by noted Bay Area architecture firm Marquis & Stoller, the property provides affordable housing to low-income residents of the Fillmore community.
In addition to preserving essential affordable housing within this historic Black San Francisco neighborhood, PTA’s rehabilitation, undertaken with a budget of $100 million, provides new accessible apartments, high-efficiency building systems, new business and service offices, an expanded community room, drought-tolerant landscaping, and a fully accessible site and play areas. New exterior finishes make the building approachable and friendly, refreshing its presentation to the neighborhood. The redevelopment’s care for the environment earned it a Greenpoint Gold Rating.
