Calistoga Community Pool
Designed in collaboration with the City of Calistoga and its residents, this new recreation complex serves the entire city, particularly its children.
The master plan responds to the long-term project goals while accounting for the city’s requirements and allotted budget. The completed first phase added two swimming pools and a simple bathhouse.
The pools are sited between the new bathhouse and a row of preserved valley oak trees, creating a coherent sense of place. The bathhouse serves as the visual and programmatic gateway to the pool. It’s designed as a covered, open-air pavilion with a butterfly roof to optimize natural ventilation on hot summer days. This passive design strategy substantially reduced construction costs and will save on long-term operational costs by almost entirely eliminating the need for a mechanical system. The second phase will further reduce expenses through the addition of rooftop solar thermal panels and an underground geothermal system to heat both pools.
