1939 Market Street

Situated at the edge of the Castro, at the nexus of the urban thoroughfare of Market Street and the busy Duboce Avenue, 1939 Market Street will provide a healthy and sustainable community for LGBTQ+ older adults, activating and reinforcing the pedestrian life of the neighborhood.

Applying the State Density Bonus to maximize the number of units and floors, the 15-story building provides 187 homes for seniors, a portion of which will be reserved for seniors that have experienced homelessness. A robust community engagement process informed design decisions, ensuring the building caters properly to the LGBTQ+ senior population.

Along Market Street, a transparent facade with colored glazing infuses the resident experience with vibrant energy. A vertical rainbow stripe is created with colored glazing along Market Street. Along Duboce Avenue, the color within the recessed balconies is achieved via LED lighting that washes the exterior walls. A lush open space on the second floor podium connects to the community room, creating an indoor-outdoor common space for residents to gather.
